GAHKUCH: Notables and political leaders of Ghizer District have given 24 hours ultimatum to GB government for recovery of four people who have been kidnapped by armed gangsters from Handarap Valley.

They demanded the government to recover the kidnapped persons, suspend the Superintendent of Police and deploy police and paramilitary forces on the routes and valleys of Ghizer District.

They made these demands while addressing a protest rally at Phander, the tehsil headquarter of Gupis on Wednesday.

“If the kidnapped persons were not recovered, SP Ghizer was not suspended they will march towards Gahkuch”, the leaders threatened.

Those who addressed the protest rally included Alam Khan, Khan Akbar Khan,  Abdul Aziz, Mir Wali, Chergholi’s Numbardar, GBLA member Qurban Shah, Musa madad, and others.

Khan Akbar blamed the SP for making the police inactive and inefficient.

PPP local president Zafar Shadimkhel held police responsible for the incident.

He said the SP is allegedly facilitating terrorists and demanded his expulsion from the district within 24 hours.

Incident details

A group of armed men on Tuesday reportedly belonging to Kohistan District of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) kidnapped eight shepherds who were herding cows and goats at Ambej Nullah in upper Handarap, a high pasture valley bordering Kohistan.

Four of the kidnapped shepherds, however, escaped from their custody while being shifted to Kohistan and reached the village.

They said that about 30 armed henchmen of Malik Afreen, an influential person of Kandial village, Gabral of Komila Tehsil, took four of their colleagues identified as Akram, Ali Sher, Amir Wali and Alamgir to Kohistan.

The locals had asked GB police chief and the Ghizer SP to deploy force on the border to stop the incursions by criminals but their demands have fallen on deaf ears.
The local people have started march towards Kohistan to rescue their kidnapped persons on their own, as the Ghizer police have failed to mobilize the force to recover them.

Some people feared risk of an armed clash between the people of Ghizer and Kohistan if the police and the army did not intervene in the matter.

Land dispute

According to locals Malik Afreen lays claim on the Ambej Nullah and other grazing lands in the uppermost part of Handarap valley.

He has filed a case in a local court in Gahkuch. The hearing of a case about the dispute has been slated for August 1.

The Ghizer police have reportedly filed an FIR of the incident but not yet visited the valley yet.

The locals have been demanding deployment of police and paramilitary forces in the area to arrest criminals and stop such incidents.

Local sources told The High Asia Herald that the armed men had threatened that they would release the abductees only after transfer of the contested land to their name.

Social and political activists took to social media with messages of condemnation and outrage, at the ‘brazen attack’. They criticized the regional government for failing to protect people.

Similar incidents have occurred earlier in Handarap and other valleys of Ghizer bordering Kohistan and Diamer. These valleys are considered as safe havens for criminals.
