The community members in Chorbat area of Baltistan including women and children have left their villages and taken to the streets for the second time in less than a month to protest against the growing police victimization of their community members.
The community members have reported that the police are raiding their homes and detaining male members without following due course of law.
According to some sources, the law-enforcement agencies have been investigating the disappearance of a military personnel since 2018 without being able to produce any solid proof of the community’s involvement in the matter.
The local community has fully assured to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies and Ghanche District Administration in the investigation process.
A five-member committee, comprised of community leaders from various villages of Chorbat was formulated to communicate with the district administration and law enforcement agencies after due consultation with the Ghanche Deputy Commissioner.
Despite this assurance, the unlawful arrest and harassment of community members has caused outrage in the community, forcing the women and children to protest against the growing insecurity.
It’s pertinent to mention here that the Ghanche District is considered to be the most peaceful district of Pakistan with a high literacy rate.
The border region of Chorbat has a huge military presence to counter any possible Indian threat. However bad policing can prove harmful in terms of keeping civil-military relations smooth in the area.
