Empowering Diamer youth: bridging the digital divide

Empowering Diamer youth

High Asia Herald Exclusive

Diamer, known as the most underdeveloped Division of Gilgit-Baltistan, has historically lagged behind in educational advancements, particularly in information technology (IT). The youth in this impoverished region, especially in the remote Darel and Tangir Valleys, have had limited exposure to IT concepts, digital skills, and opportunities in freelancing.

However, against these odds, a visionary young journalist and social activist stepped forward to illuminate the path of knowledge. Arshad Hussain Jugnu, driven by progressive ideals and a deep understanding of social dynamics, took on the challenge of introducing Diamer’s youth to the modern digital world.

In 2021, supported by the Gilgit-Baltistan Rural Support Program, Arshad initiated the groundbreaking “Digital Diamer” project. This ambitious initiative aims to empower local youth through comprehensive training in marketing and web development.

Building on the success of its inaugural session, facilitated under the auspices of MedioTech, the second phase of the project commenced in collaboration with the Moawin Foundation. Over four months, a new cohort of young individuals underwent intensive training, culminating in a significant milestone event at Chilas Software Technology Park on July 13, 2024.

This event not only marked the conclusion of their training but also symbolized a leap forward for Diamer’s youth, equipping them with essential skills to thrive in the digital age.

Fifteen participants received training in digital marketing, and two students completed projects valued at $5 each during the course. Their achievements were showcased at the closing ceremony.

The event was attended by notables including Moawin Foundation’s Program Manager, Pirzada Shumail Alam; Medio-Tech founder and CEO Arshad Hussain; KIU Diamer Campus Director Dr Tahir Hussain, and Tourism Department’s Assistant Director Fiyazur Rehman.

During his address, Pirzada Shumail Alam highlighted his Foundation’s commitment to empowering the youth of Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly in Diamer, through IT initiatives. He reassured continued support for future training programs in various disciplines.

Arshad Hussain underscored the pivotal role of information and communication technology in today’s world. He explained about his organisation’s initiative that aims to equip Diamer’s youth with modern skills, fostering economic empowerment. He expressed gratitude to the Moawin Foundation for their invaluable support.

Dr Tahir and Rehman also praised the Foundation and MedioTech for their contributions to the people of Diamer, acknowledging their significant impact through collaborative efforts.

The initiative, according to Arshad, has been a significant success. Starting from scratch, the students have made remarkable progress in IT education and skills. They are now actively working on their projects and exploring various innovative ideas.

“The Digital Diamer is not just an educational initiative; ; it is a movement towards a brighter, more connected future for the youth of Diamer, a beacon of hope for the region,” as he puts it. The project aims to empower the youth of Diamer by providing them with essential skills in various trades, marking a significant milestone for the area.

“By introducing IT education to a community that had largely been excluded from the digital revolution,” Arshad says, “Digital Diamer is transforming lives and opening new opportunities. This initiative not only enhances employability but also fosters innovation and self-reliance among the youth, paving the way for a brighter future for Diamer”.

The journey of Digital Diamer is a testament to the resilience and potential of the students. Their dedication and hard work have enabled them to progress from being complete novices to developing innovative projects.

The success of Digital Diamer demonstrates that with the right support and opportunities, even the most remote and underserved communities can harness the power of information technology to improve their socio-economic conditions.

“We are immensely proud of the progress made by the students of Diamer,” declares Arshad. Their journey from unfamiliarity with IT to becoming competent in marketing and web development is a source of great joy and pride for all involved in the project, he says.

Digital Diamer’s first-ever IT project emerged in 2021 to equip the youth of Diamer with digital skills and freelancing opportunities. Initially confronted with a shortage of IT centres, our team conducted awareness sessions and fostered collaboration with relevant departments to advocate for enhanced IT education in the region. We witnessed a transformative shift through the relentless efforts of MedioTech’s team and partnerships with organizations such as GBRSP, AKRSP, the KIU’s IT department, district administration, and the Moawin Foundation.

“Today, the success stories of Digital Diamer reverberate in the region. We have trained numerous young minds in various fields, including marketing, web development, e-commerce, and graphic design. Through our collective endeavour, we have cultivated a thriving community of freelancers and entrepreneurs who possess skills and earn their livelihood.”

The establishment of the Software Technology Park in Chilas and multiple IT labs in schools is evidence of our initiative’s impact, claims Arshad. However, he clarifies that this success is not solely the result of individual efforts but a collective triumph of the entire team behind the Digital Diamer project.

“We take pride in spearheading this movement, unlocking the potential of Diamer’s youth, and paving the way for a brighter, digitally empowered future,” he concluded.
